HIT AND RUN

A FORD FAMILY MYSTERY SHORT STORY

SNOW-DUSTED EVERGREENS lined the narrow road. The headlights of Will’s Oldsmobile Cutlass illuminated the ghostly trees as he navigated the curves. Although it was neither raining nor snowing, the road was wet and shimmery from yesterday’s snowstorm. The air temperature had risen into the upper forties, producing an ethereal layer of wispy fog floating above the four-foot snowbanks along the edge of the road.

Will turned slightly to his right. Vera’s eyes were closed. It was only seven o’clock, but she had two martinis before they left the house. She didn’t have to come with him, but she insisted. Said she needed to get out of the house for a bit of fresh air. Behind him, two thirteen-year-old girls whispered and giggled.
